How Lake August Was Made
Lake August is a "man-made" lake. This means it was dug out by humans. Old maps show that this area used to be a swamp. Over time, it was dredged, or dug out, to create the lake we see today. It is surrounded by homes along Washington Avenue.
Where is Lake August?
You can find Lake August in Placid Lakes. This is a large neighborhood. It's located southwest of the town of Lake Placid, Florida. The lake is a key feature of this residential area.
Getting to Lake August
It's not easy for everyone to visit Lake August. Public access to the lake is very limited. There are no public boat ramps for launching boats. You also won't find any public swimming areas here.
Connecting to Other Lakes
There is a small water channel on the northeast side of Lake August. This channel connects Lake August to a much larger lake called Lake June in Winter. The channel is about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) long. However, you cannot travel through this channel by boat. It is very shallow in most places. It also passes through pipes called culverts under two roads. People can sometimes fish from a narrow spot along Washington Boulevard where the channel begins.
