Lake Clarke is a large, man-made lake in Pennsylvania. It was created along the Susquehanna River. This lake was formed by the Safe Harbor Dam.

The dam was built during the 1930s. This was a time called the Great Depression. Many people needed jobs. The dam was part of a plan called the New Deal. This plan helped build many projects. These projects also brought electricity to more homes.

Lake Clarke is about 12 miles (19 km) long. It is located in the Conejohela Valley. This is about 6 miles (9.7 km) downstream from an old ferry crossing.

Fun at Lake Clarke

The Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation helps people enjoy the lake. They have built many fun places. You can find picnic areas and playgrounds. There are also places to launch your boat. These spots are on both sides of the lake.

Boating and Marinas

Lake Clarke is a popular spot for boats. It has several marinas. A marina is a place where boats can dock.

  • Safe Harbor has its own boat access areas.
  • The Susquehanna Yacht Club is also on the lake.
  • There are two private marinas on the York County side.

Keeping Lake Clarke Safe

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary helps keep the lake safe. They are like a volunteer safety patrol. Their group is called Flotilla 19-5. They patrol the waters of Lake Clarke. Their base is in Wrightsville. It is on the York County side of the lake. They help boaters and make sure everyone is safe.
