Lake Enol is a beautiful lake located high up in the mountains of the Asturias region in Spain. It sits within the Picos de Europa mountains.
It's right next to Lake Ercina, and together they are known as the Lakes of Covadonga. Both lakes are part of the amazing Picos de Europa National Park. Lake Enol is the bigger of the two lakes.
The lake is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Covadonga and 25 kilometers (15 miles) from Cangas de Onís. You can reach the lake by a winding road from Arriondas. It covers about 0.1 square kilometers, making it one of the largest lakes in this area. Lake Enol sits high up, about 1,070 meters (3,510 feet) above sea level. It was formed a long time ago when a glacier melted and moved away.
Culture and Traditions
Every year on September 8th, a special statue of the Virgin Mary is brought up from under the lake. People then carry it in a procession.
On July 25th, the Fiesta del Pastor (Shepherd's Festival) takes place here. During this festival, you can see traditional regional dancing.
