Lake Killian, also known as Spring Lake, is a small lake in Pearson, Wisconsin. It's a special type of lake called a kettle lake. This means it formed a long time ago from melting ice. The lake is completely inside the Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation.

This lake is a very important part of the scout camp. It actually splits the camp into two main areas: East Camp and West Camp. Both sides of the lake have special areas for water activities. Scouts use the lake for fun things like fishing, swimming, and boating. They can also earn different merit badges here.

How Lake Killian Gets Its Water

Lake Killian gets all its water from two natural sources. First, water flows in from underground springs. Second, it collects water from rain and snow, which is called precipitation.

The only place water leaves Lake Killian is through a stream called Skid's Creek. This creek flows out from the west side of the lake. Because Skid's Creek starts far north in the lake, the water in the southern part of the lake stays there for a much longer time.

Exploring the Lake's Depths

The bottom of Lake Killian has different depths. The northern part of the lake is quite shallow, usually less than 3 meters (about 10 feet) deep. As you move towards the middle, the lake gets deeper.

The very center of the lake has a deep area, about 5 meters (16 feet) or more. The southern and eastern parts of the lake are generally deeper than the northern and western areas. There's also a large sandbar in the southwest part of the lake. It's less than a meter (about 3 feet) under the surface and stretches for about a hundred meters. This sandbar is surrounded by shallower water.

The deepest point in Lake Killian is about 7.6 meters (25 feet). However, the average depth of the whole lake is much shallower, only about 3.6 meters (12 feet).
