Discovering Lake Mokoma: A Look Back
Lake Mokoma was created because of a big change in travel: the arrival of trains!
How Lake Mokoma Began
In 1887, two people named Ellery Ingham and W.C. Mason had a great idea. They wanted to create a fun lake resort. Trains were now reaching nearby Laporte, making it easier for people to visit. So, they started a company called the Lake Mokoma Land Company. They built a large earthen dam to create the lake.
Early Dreams and Challenges
Their goal was to make Lake Mokoma a popular vacation spot. They hoped it would be as famous as Eagles Mere, another resort just 5 miles away. By 1894, the lake already had cool features. There was a steam vessel (a boat powered by steam), a pavilion for gatherings, and bath houses for swimming.
However, the first company didn't quite succeed. Another group, the Lake Mokoma Company, took over in 1908. They added a beach house and a dance hall. But this company also faced challenges.
The Lake Mokoma Association Today
Later, in 1939, the Lake Mokoma Development Corporation took charge. Finally, in 1959, the people who owned properties around the lake decided to buy it themselves. They formed the Lake Mokoma Association, which still manages the lake today.
What Does the Lake Mokoma Association Do?
The Lake Mokoma Association helps manage and protect the lake for everyone to enjoy.
Who Uses Lake Mokoma?
About 190 active and associate members, along with their guests, use the facilities at Lake Mokoma. It's a private community where people can relax and have fun.
Protecting the Lake's Beauty
The main goals of the Association are very important. They work to "preserve and develop" the area. This means they want to keep the lake beautiful and protect its natural resources. They also make sure there are plenty of fun activities for members. Their aim is to make sure everyone can enjoy the lake's beauty and recreational opportunities.
