Lakeview Terrace is a large housing area in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. It includes row houses, apartments, and a tall building called Lakeview Tower. This project started in 1935, and the Lakeview Tower was finished in 1973. The tower is 208 feet tall and has 19 floors. Lakeview Terrace is special because it was one of the very first public housing projects in the United States.
History of Lakeview Terrace
In the 1920s and 1930s, many people moved to Cleveland. This caused cities to become very crowded. There weren't enough affordable homes for everyone. People thought the government should help solve this problem.
So, the plan for Lakeview Terrace began. It was started in 1935 by Ernest J. Bohn. He was the first leader of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority. The goal was to create low-cost homes for people in Cleveland. The project also included a community center. This center would help residents with things like safety and education.
Lakeview Terrace was one of the first places to offer affordable housing for families with lower incomes. Cleveland was a leader in this idea. Other big cities like Chicago, Detroit, and New York City later used similar plans. At the time, Cleveland was praised for its new ideas in city planning. The entire complex was designed by Joseph L. Weinberg, William H. Conrad, and Wallace G. Teare. It was also built to be completely fireproof.
Lakeview Tower: A Symbol of Affordable Homes
The most important part of Lakeview Terrace is the Lakeview Tower. This tall building was finished in 1973. It has 211 apartment units. It is the second-tallest public housing building in Cleveland.
The tower shows Cleveland's dedication to providing safe and affordable homes. It stands out in the skyline of Ohio City and the Flats. It sits on a hill and looks over downtown Cleveland. It's called Lakeview Tower because you can see Lake Erie from it. In 2015, the Northeast Ohio Apartment Association gave the tower an award.
