Lakewood is what we call a ghost town in Lyon County, Iowa. A ghost town is a place that used to be a community but now has very few or no people living there.
The Story of Lakewood
A post office was opened in Lakewood in the year 1900. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. It stayed open for 18 years, closing down in 1918.
The town got its name because it was close to a lake surrounded by woods. So, "Lakewood" means "lake in the woods."
In 1925, about 25 people lived in Lakewood. By 1940, the number of people had dropped to only 9. This shows how the town slowly became a ghost town.
