Lakona was an important leader, known as a High Chief, on the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. He played a key role in the history of this beautiful island.

Who Was Lakona?

Lakona was born on Oʻahu around the year 1340. His father was Nawele, who was also a High Chief of Oʻahu. His mother was Kalanimoeikawaikai. Because he was Nawele's son, Lakona was sometimes called Lakona-a-Nawele. This name simply means "Lakona, son of Nawele."

Lakona's Family Life

Lakona married a woman named Alaʻikauakoko. She was also known as Kanakoko. Together, they had a son named Kapaealakona. Kapaealakona would later become the next ruler of Oʻahu after his father.

Lakona's Rule as Chief

After his father, Nawele, passed away, Lakona became the new High Chief of Oʻahu. He didn't rule alone, though. He shared his leadership with his female cousin, Maelo. This shows that leadership roles could sometimes be shared in ancient Hawaiian society. As High Chief, Lakona was responsible for leading his people and managing the island's affairs.
