The Lamoreau Site is an important archaeological site located in Auburn, Maine. It is also known as the Maine Archaeological Survey Site 23.13. This special place is found on the land of the Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport. In 1989, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important historical places in the United States. The site is named after Henry Lamoreau, who first discovered it.

What is the Lamoreau Site?

The Lamoreau Site is one of many ancient places found near the Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport. Some of these sites were fully dug up by archaeologists. Then, they were covered over when new airport buildings were constructed. The Lamoreau Site is located next to Moose Brook, in a quiet part of the airport.

A Home from the Past

This site was once a place where people lived long ago. It is across the brook from another very important site called the Michaud Site. Sadly, the Michaud Site was one of those that were dug up and built over.

How the Land Was Formed

Both the Lamoreau and Michaud sites are on similar land. This land is a sandy plain that formed about 10,000 years ago. This happened when huge ice sheets, called glaciers, melted and moved away. The wind then blew the sand into small hills called dunes. Ancient people made their homes among these dunes.

Discoveries at the Site

Scientists carefully studied the Lamoreau Site in the 1980s. They found many interesting things there. Most of the discoveries were tools and other objects made from stone.

Stone Tools and Artifacts

The main things found were stone tools. These included special spear points called fluted projectile points. Scientists also found small scraping tools. They also discovered waste pieces from making stone tools. These small pieces are called debitage.

Where the Stone Came From

Most of the stone used for these tools came from far away. Some of it was a type of rock called rhyolite. This rhyolite came from a place called Mount Jasper in New Hampshire. Other tools were made from a stone called chert. This chert came from the Munsungan area in northern Maine. This shows that ancient people traveled or traded over long distances.
