Lampazos de Naranjo is a city and municipality in Nuevo León, Mexico. Its name has two parts. The first part, Lampazos, comes from a local plant called Xanthosoma robustum. The second part, de Naranjo, honors General Naranjo. This is a common way to name places in Latin America. In 2000, about 5,305 people lived in this municipality.

Lampazos de Naranjo is in the northwestern part of Nuevo León. It sits about 335 meters (1,099 feet) above sea level. The municipality covers a large area of 4,020 square kilometers (1,552 square miles).

How Lampazos de Naranjo Was Founded

Lampazos was first started on November 12, 1698. It was founded by a person named Fray Diego de Salazar. The original name was quite long: “San Antonio de la Nueva Tlaxcala y misión de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de la Punta de Lampazos.”

Changes to the City's Name and Size

In 1877, the name was shortened to Villa de Lampazos. Today, it is known as “Lampazos de Naranjo.” This new name honors General Francisco Naranjo, a hero from the French intervention and the Reformation period in Mexico. In 1935, Lampazos became smaller when a new municipality, Anáhuac, was created. Then, on December 28, 1977, Lampazos officially became a city.
