Lana Gogoberidze (Georgian: ლანა ღოღობერიძე) was born on October 13, 1928, in Tbilisi, Georgia. She is a famous Georgian film director. She also worked as a diplomat and was a member of parliament.

Early Life and Education

Lana Gogoberidze's mother, Nutsa Gogoberidze, was also a well-known Georgian film director. Sadly, Lana's father, Levan Gogoberidze, was killed in 1937 during a difficult time in history. Her mother was also sent to a prison camp for twelve years.

Because of this, Lana first lived in an orphanage. Later, her aunts took her in and cared for her. Lana wanted to become a director, just like her mother. However, it was hard for her to get the right education because of what happened to her parents.

Instead, she studied English and American literature at Tbilisi State University. She learned about writers like Walt Whitman. After a major political change, she was finally able to study filmmaking. She went to Moscow State University and graduated in 1958.

Career in Film and Politics

In 1975, Lana Gogoberidze led the Director's Studio at the Rustaveli Theatre School in Tbilisi. She helped many young filmmakers learn their craft.

Her talent was recognized internationally. In 1988, she became the President of the International Association of Women Directors. This showed her leadership in the world of cinema.

Lana Gogoberidze also played a role in her country's government. She was elected to the Parliament of Georgia and served from 1992 to 1995. From 1996 to 2000, she was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In 2004, she served as Georgia's Ambassador to France.

Achievements and Awards

Lana Gogoberidze has made many fiction and documentary films. Her movies have won several awards around the world. Her film Day Is Longer Than Night was shown at the famous 1984 Cannes Film Festival. In the same year, she was a judge at the 34th Berlin International Film Festival.

She has received many honors for her work. These include the State Award of the USSR and the State Award of the Georgian SSR. She was also named the People's Artist of the Republic of Georgia. France honored her with the Legion of Honour, a very important award.

Family Life

Lana Gogoberidze married the architect Vladimir Aleksi-Meskhishvili in 1958. He passed away in 1978. They had two daughters. One of her daughters, Salomé Alexi, has also become a film director, following in her mother's footsteps.
