Club History
How Lancefield Started
Lancefield Football Club probably started around 1874. Some people thought it began in 1864. But that was likely when a cricket club, which the football team grew from, was founded. The first football games we know about were played in the 1874–75 season.
Playing in the Scottish Cup
Lancefield first joined the Scottish Cup in the 1876–77 season. This was their best year in the competition. They beat Parkgrove F.C. in the first round. Lancefield scored two goals, thanks to M'Callum and Jeffrey.
The team made it all the way to the quarter-finals. This meant they were among the top six teams in the competition that year. They played against Ayr Thistle F.C. at their home ground, Brighton Park. The first game ended in a 2–2 draw. Ayr Thistle won the replay with a goal from Cunninghame.
Later Years
In the 1877–78 season, Lancefield lost in the first round to Alexandra Athletic F.C.. This loss seemed to make the club less active. They left the Scottish Football Association and did not rejoin until 1880.
When they rejoined, they entered the Scottish Cup for the last time. They lost again in the first round, 4–2, to the Pilgrims team. Even though their goalkeeper, Boyd, played very well, Pilgrims scored four goals.
Lancefield continued to play at a lower level for a few more years. The last game recorded was a 3–1 win against the Ardoch club in 1882.
Team Colours
Lancefield Football Club wore red and black jerseys with 3-inch hoops. Their shorts were white, and their stockings were red and black. In their final season, the team changed their kit to navy blue shirts and white shorts.
Home Grounds
The club first played their home games at Brighton Park. Later, in the 1875–76 season, they sometimes played at Queen's Park. This ground was a bit far from Govan.
By 1877, Lancefield moved to Clifford Park. This was a private ground on Helen Street in Govan. They took over this ground after Parkgrove F.C. moved to a different location.
