Saint Landry of Sées
Died March 4, 480
Venerated in Roman Catholic Church
Feast July 16

Landry of Sées (also known as Landericus) was a French saint and bishop. He was one of the earliest people known by the name Landry, living around the year 450. Saint Landry was the third Bishop of Sées, a leader in the Christian church. He passed away on March 4, 480, and his special day is celebrated on July 16.

Landry became bishop after Saint Sigibold, who had followed Saint Latuin. Saint Latuin was the first bishop of Sées, serving from 400 to 440. Landry lived a very holy life. He worked hard to help Christianity grow and become stronger in his region.

He faced many challenges while doing his work. Some old stories say he went through very difficult times. However, these stories are not fully confirmed. Landry died peacefully on March 4, 480, when he was very old. He passed away while with Saint Contest, who was the Bishop of Bayeux and happened to be in Sées at that time.

Honoring Saint Landry

Saint Landry was buried in his cathedral, which was a large church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This was not the grand Gothic building you might see today. The original church where Saint Landry was laid to rest was destroyed in 878. This happened during an invasion by the Saxons.

His name is mentioned in an old book called the Martyrology of Ainon. By the 11th century, people were already celebrating a special day for him on July 16. A person named Focoal added a special church service in Landry's honor. This service was recited in the diocese until 1864. In all the churches, people would say a prayer that went like this:

Lord Almighty, who had tested the faith of the Blessed Saint Landry and rewarded his piety, enliven us with a great zeal in order to work, in following his example, for our sanctification, and sustain our weakness, with the help of the prayers of your faithful servant. Grant us this grace, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
