Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Landsforbundet for Kvinders Valgret (LKV), which means the National Association for Women's Suffrage, was an important group in Denmark. It worked to get women the right to vote. This group was active from 1907 until 1915.

Why LKV Was Formed

Before LKV, there was another group called the Danish Women's Society. However, this group wasn't very focused on getting women the right to vote. Because of this, a new organization was started in 1898. It was called Danske Kvindeforeningers Valgretsudvalg, and its main goal was to help women get voting rights.

Later, in 1904, this group changed its name to Valgretsforbundet. Then, in 1907, it joined forces with Landsforbundet for Kvinders Valgret.

How LKV Started and Grew

Landsforbundet for Kvinders Valgret actually grew out of a local women's group called Politisk Kvindeforening. In 1906, a new group, Københavns Kvindevalgretsforening, was created in Copenhagen. In 1907, this group changed its name to Landsforbundet for Kvinders Valgret.

The LKV was started by three important women:

Right from the beginning, Julie Arenholt was also a very influential member of the group.

The LKV was formed because its founders felt that the work of the Dansk Kvindesamfund (Danish Women's Society) was too slow and careful when it came to women's voting rights. The LKV wanted to be more active. It quickly became a national organization, bringing together all the local women's suffrage groups across Denmark and even helping to start new ones.

When LKV Achieved Its Goal

The organization continued its work until 1915. In that year, women in Denmark finally gained the right to vote. Once their main goal was achieved, the Landsforbundet for Kvinders Valgret was no longer needed, so it was dissolved.
