Elna Munch (born Elna Sarauw) was a very important Danish woman. She was born on June 13, 1871, and passed away on November 17, 1945. Elna was a strong leader for women's rights and a politician. She helped start the Landsforbundet for Kvinders Valgret, which means the National Association for Women's Suffrage. This group worked to get women the right to vote in Denmark.

Elna Munch's Early Life and Education

Elna was born to Conrad August Nicolaus Sarauw and Betzy Wilhelmine Hansen. She had an older sister named Clara Tybjerg. Elna went to a school called N. Zahle's School.

She then studied mathematics at Copenhagen University. She was very smart and became the second woman ever to get a math degree from a Danish university! After her studies, she worked as a teacher at Marie Kruse's school from 1900 to 1918. In 1902, she married Peter Rochegune Munch, who was also a politician.

Fighting for Women's Right to Vote

Elna Munch was a key person in the fight for women's suffrage (the right to vote). She helped create the National Association for Women's Suffrage (LKV) in 1907. This group was one of the main organizations working for women's voting rights in Denmark.

Elna was the vice-chairperson of the LKV from the very beginning. She helped organize local groups of the LKV all over Denmark. She also traveled to international meetings, representing Denmark at the International Alliance of Women from 1906 to 1923. Her hard work paid off when women in Denmark finally got the right to vote in 1915. After this, the LKV group was no longer needed.

Becoming a Politician

In 1918, a big change happened: women were allowed to run for national elections in Denmark. Elna Munch was one of the first four women to be elected to the Folketing. The Folketing is the Danish national parliament, similar to a country's main law-making body.

She held her seat in the parliament for many years, serving from 1918 until 1935. Elna Munch passed away in Copenhagen on November 17, 1945. She is remembered as a pioneering woman who made a huge difference for women's rights and participation in politics in Denmark.
