The Lane Miles Standish Printing Plant Building is a cool old building in Portland, Oregon. It was built in 1929 for two successful businessmen, Alan Lane and Miles Standish, who owned a printing company. The building was designed by the Austin Company from Cleveland. It's a great example of late Gothic Revival architecture, a style that first became popular in Europe.

This building was originally a busy place where books and papers were printed. Today, it's used by a company that focuses on management and design. It's also connected to a newer apartment building called Lane 1919, which was built next to it.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The Lane Miles Standish Printing Plant Building is located at 1539 NW 19th Avenue in Portland. It has two main floors. A special part of the building is its roof, which looks like a castle! This "castellated" rooftop is right above the main entrance.

The building also has other features inspired by the late Gothic Revival style. These include small supports called buttresses and windows divided into many small panels. These features are a bit simpler than those you might see on very old European buildings, like the huge Reims Cathedral in France. The outside of the building is mostly white with some black lines. Even though it's not a printing plant anymore, it still keeps the name of the old company. This helps people remember its interesting history.

The main building is about 13,000 square feet in size. The apartment building next to it, Lane 1919, was built in 2006.

A Look at Its History

The Lane Miles Standish Printing Company started in 1919. It was founded by Alan Lane and Miles Standish. In 1929, they decided to build this new facility for their growing business.

The idea for the late Gothic Revival style came from Alan Lane. He remembered similar buildings from his childhood. The building is still owned by the families of the original founders. However, a different company, not related to printing, uses it now.

In March 2007, the building was officially recognized by the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This means it's an important historical site in the United States.
