Lankaran (also spelled Lənkəran) is a special area, like a county, in the country of Azerbaijan. Even though the city of Lankaran is inside this area, it's managed separately. Scientists have found old tools and signs that people have lived in Lankaran for a very long time, even since the Bronze Age (thousands of years ago!). For about 66 years, from 1747 to 1813, Lankaran was the most important city of a kingdom called the Talysh Khanate.

Nature and Wildlife

The Lankaran region has many beautiful national parks. These parks protect different kinds of plants and animals.

Gizil-Agach State Reserve

One important park is the Gizil-Agach State Reserve. It is home to more than 250 different types of plants. You can also find over 30 kinds of fish and more than 220 types of birds here. It's a great place for birdwatching!

Hirkan National Park

Lankaran is also famous for a special tree called Parrotia persica, or ironwood. This tree grows naturally in the region. You can find many ironwood trees in Hirkan National Park. The wood of this tree is very strong, like iron!

This national park is also where the Persian leopard lives. This leopard is a type of leopard found in this part of the world. It's a very rare and beautiful big cat.
