Who Was Zachary Lansdowne?
Zachary Lansdowne was born in Greenville. He went to Greenville High School. After graduating, he joined the United States Naval Academy. He became a pioneer, meaning a very early leader, in the U.S. Navy's airship program.
Airships were like giant balloons that could fly. Zachary Lansdowne was the commander of a famous airship called the USS Shenandoah. Sadly, he was killed when the Shenandoah crashed on September 3, 1925.
