The Lapeer County Courthouse is a very old and important building in Lapeer, Michigan. It's where many important county decisions were made for a long time. This historic building was recognized as a special Michigan State Historic Site in 1957. Later, in 1971, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was the very first building in Lapeer County to get either of these special honors!
About the Courthouse
The Lapeer County Courthouse is a two-story building made of wood. It stands on a raised foundation. The building was designed in the Greek Revival style. This style was popular in the 1800s. It looks like ancient Greek temples, with tall columns and a triangular roof section called a pediment.
Inside, the second floor has a main courtroom for trials. There is also a room for the jury. The first floor holds offices for county workers. Restrooms are located in the basement. The building also has a small display from the Lapeer County Historical Society. It shows some old furniture and items from the past.
Because the old courthouse is small, many offices moved. The police station, probate court, and jail are now in a newer building. This new complex is right behind the old courthouse.
Its History
The Lapeer County Courthouse is one of the oldest courthouses in Michigan. It is known as the oldest original courthouse building still being used in Michigan. It is also one of the ten oldest courthouses in the entire country!
Lapeer County was created in 1822. The city of Lapeer became the main town, or "county seat," in 1831. The current courthouse building was started in 1845 and finished in 1846. The year "1846" is even written on the front of the building.
A state representative named Alvin N. Hart helped make sure Lapeer stayed the county seat. He was important in getting the courthouse built. In 1853, he sold the building to the Lapeer County Board of Supervisors. This group helps manage the county.
An important group called the Grange started here in Michigan. The first local Grange meeting in Michigan happened at this courthouse in 1872. The Grange is a community organization for farmers.
Since it was built, the courthouse has only had one major change. In 1938, three doorways were added to the front porch area, called the portico.
Visiting the Courthouse
Today, the Lapeer County Historical Society owns the courthouse. They open it for tours during special events. You can also rent the building for your own events. It's a great place to learn about local history!
