Becoming a Comic Artist

Larry Stroman loved comic books from a very young age. He would read comics from his brother or friends. He kept reading until he could buy his own. His dream was always to become a comic book artist.
Before drawing comics full-time, he worked other jobs. He was a draftsman first. Then he moved to New York City. There, he worked as a portrait artist for a few years.
When drawing comics, Stroman often uses the "Marvel method". This is a way of creating comics where the writer gives a basic story idea. The artist then draws the story based on that idea. After the art is done, the writer adds the dialogue. To make sure his stories flowed well, Stroman had a special trick. He would draw the last few pages of a comic right after drawing the first page. He would then draw the middle pages last.
Early Work in Comics
Stroman started his comic book career in 1985. He drew backup stories for comics like American Flagg! and World's Finest Comics. Soon after, he began working on Alien Legion for Marvel Comics. He drew many issues of this series. He also worked on other Marvel titles. These included Alpha Flight Annual and Ghost Rider.
He also drew for other publishers. He worked on The Mark for Dark Horse Comics. He also contributed to The Law of Dredd. Sometimes, he shared drawing duties with other artists. For example, he drew some pages for Uncanny X-Men #273.
Working on X-Factor and Beyond
In 1991, a big change happened in the X-Men comic universe. The series X-Factor got a new team and story. Larry Stroman joined writer Peter David on this series. He was first brought in as a temporary artist. But soon, he became the regular artist for X-Factor. He even got to redesign the characters' costumes. Stroman drew issues 71 to 81 of the series.
After his time on X-Factor, he drew other popular comics. These included Wolverine and Punisher. He also worked on Darkstars for DC Comics.
Creating The Tribe
In 1993, Stroman teamed up with writer Todd Johnson. Together, they created a comic series called Tribe. This comic was published by Image Comics. Tribe became a very successful comic. Its first issue sold over one million copies to comic shops. This made it the biggest-selling comic created by African-American artists at the time.
Later, Tribe stopped being published by Image Comics. So, Stroman and Johnson started their own company, Axis Comics. They wanted to continue publishing Tribe there. However, Axis Comics closed after only nine issues. Stroman explained that changes in their working relationship and other challenges led to the company closing.
Later Comic Projects
In the late 1990s, Stroman continued his work. He drew for WildC.A.T.s: Covert Action Teams Annual. He also worked on more Marvel titles. These included X-Men: The Early Years and Excalibur.
In the 2000s, Stroman contributed to many projects. He worked on the The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe series. This series provides information about Marvel characters. He also drew for What-If comics. In 2008, he reunited with writer Peter David. They worked together again on X-Factor volume 3. Stroman also illustrated the miniseries X-Men: The Times and Life of Lucas Bishop. He also drew for Thunderbolts in 2009.
