Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Las Caritas ("The faces") is a special place in the Dominican Republic. It's known for ancient carvings on rocks that look out over a beautiful lake called Lake Enriquillo. This site is also called the Trono de Enriquillo ("Enriquillo's throne"). People say that Enriquillo, a famous Taíno leader, used this spot as a camp during his fight for freedom.

What are Las Caritas?

Las Caritas is a collection of old carvings made by the first people who lived in this area. These carvings are found on a rock formation. They are called "faces" because many of the designs look like human faces. These carvings are very old and tell us about the history and art of the people who lived there long ago.

Who were the Taíno People?

The Taíno were one of the main groups of indigenous people who lived in the Caribbean islands, including the Dominican Republic, before Europeans arrived. They were skilled farmers, fishers, and artists. They lived in villages, had their own leaders, and created beautiful pottery, tools, and carvings like those at Las Caritas.

Enriquillo: A Taíno Leader

The site is also known as "Enriquillo's Throne" because of a famous Taíno leader named Enriquillo. He was a brave leader who stood up for his people's rights. He led a rebellion against the Spanish in the early 1500s. Enriquillo and his followers used the mountains and hidden places, like this rock formation, as safe spots during their struggle. He fought for many years to protect his people and their way of life.
