The Story of Las Lajas

Exploring the Geography
Rivers and Streams
Las Lajas has a few streams that flow through it. One stream is called Quebrada Seca Quebrada de Daniel. Another stream, Quebrada Galana, runs parallel to it. When Quebrada Galana enters the town, some people call it Quebrada Mangos.
How the Town Grew
Las Lajas started to grow in the middle of the 20th century. People first came for livestock grazing. Later, they needed land for farming. The first families to settle here were the Flores, Ulloa, Ponce, Buezo, and Romero families. They built the first homes and created the first neighborhood, known as El Porvenir.
Today, Las Lajas has grown a lot. Its streets are not always in a perfect grid. The town has several neighborhoods, each with its own character.
Main Neighborhoods
- The Neighborhood Center: This is the heart of Las Lajas. It has the municipal offices, the main Catholic church, schools, and shops. You can also find hotels and a gas station here. It stretches for more than a kilometer along one main street.
- El Porvenir: Located just north of the downtown area, this neighborhood has wide streets. It is home to churches, primary schools, a gas station, and a bus station.
- Suyapa and San Francisco: These neighborhoods are south of the downtown area. They are connected and share services like water, schools, and a health center. They also have secondary schools and local businesses.
- El Carmen: This neighborhood is growing in the northwestern part of the town center. Its population is increasing over time.
- New Valley: Located to the west, this neighborhood also runs along a single street. It offers the same basic services as the other neighborhoods.
