Las Parejas is a city located in the southwest part of Santa Fe province, Argentina. You can find it along National Route 178. According to the 2010 census, about 12,375 people live in Las Parejas.
History of Las Parejas
The town of Las Parejas was started in 1889. It was built on land that belonged to the Ferrocarril Central Argentino railway company. The local government, called a commune, was officially set up on October 6, 1902. Later, on June 27, 1986, Las Parejas officially became a city.
Economy and Industry
The main part of the economy in Las Parejas is based on farming. People also raise cattle, but on a smaller scale. Since the early 2000s, industries in the city have grown a lot. They especially focus on making machines used for farming.
Las Parejas and a nearby city called Armstrong together produce a big part of these farming machines. This industry helps meet the needs of local farmers and has even started to export products to other countries. Because of its strong focus on smaller businesses, Las Parejas was named the "Provincial Capital of the Small and Medium Enterprise" in 2004.
Famous People from Las Parejas
Many talented people have come from Las Parejas. Here are a few:
- Héctor Cavallero (born in 1939) is a politician. He used to be the mayor of Rosario and a national deputy.
- Jorge Valdano (born in 1955) was a famous football (soccer) player. After playing, he became a commentator and a coach.
- Antonio Bonfatti (born in 1950) is a doctor and a politician. When democracy returned to Argentina in 1983, he was elected Mayor of Las Parejas. He also worked as a doctor at the local hospital. Later, in 1989, he was elected as a councilor. He became the 83rd Governor of Santa Fe province and is a leader in the Socialist Party.
- Daniel Onega (born in 1945) is a retired Argentine football player. He played most of his career for the famous River Plate team.
