About Lasse Pöysti

From Child Star to Theatre Manager

Lasse Pöysti started acting when he was just a kid! He became famous in Finland for playing Olli Suominen in the "Suominen family" movies. The first movie, Suomisen perhe, came out in 1941 when Lasse was only 14 years old. After finishing school in 1945, he continued his acting career.

Lasse Pöysti also worked as a theatre manager. From 1967 to 1974, he managed the Lilla Teatern with his ex-wife, Birgitta Ulfsson. He also acted in many plays there. Later, he managed the Tampere Workers' Theatre from 1974 to 1981. From 1981 to 1985, he was the manager of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, Sweden.

TV Shows and Writing

Lasse Pöysti appeared in many television shows. He played the main characters in plays by August Strindberg, like Gustav III and Erik XIV. He also played the main role in the play Galileo by Bertolt Brecht, which critics loved. A fun fact is that he also read bedtime stories on children's TV programs!

Besides acting, Lasse Pöysti wrote several books, including his own life story. In 2002, he was chosen to pick the winner of the Finlandia Prize, a big book award in Finland. He lived in Paris for a while, but later lived in Lauttasaari, Helsinki.

A Family of Actors

Lasse Pöysti was married to actress Birgitta Ulfsson from 1952 to 1984. Their son, Erik Pöysti, is also an actor and director. Lasse's granddaughter, Alma Pöysti, is also an actress in Helsinki. It seems acting runs in the family! In 2010, Lasse Pöysti received the Concrete-Jussi award for his amazing work throughout his life. The Jussi Awards are like the Oscars in Finland.
