Latarmá River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Latarmá River, also known as Latarma or Arria, is a river located in Cantabria, Spain. It is a smaller river that flows into the Lamasón River. The Lamasón River then joins the Nansa River, making the Latarmá part of the larger Nansa River system. The Latarmá River is about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) long. It begins high up at 339 meters (1,112 feet) above sea level and flows down to 180 meters (590 feet) where it meets the Lamasón River.

Where the River Flows

The Latarmá River starts in the Arria mountain range, specifically in a place called Peña Rubia. The first part of its journey goes through Asturias. Before it meets the Lamasón River, the Latarmá sometimes flows underground and then reappears.

There are two main spots where the river water comes up from underground. One is near Lafuente, at 339 meters (1,112 feet) high. The other is close to Venta Fresnedo, at 180 meters (590 feet). The last cave where the river goes underground is called Cueva del Toyo. After this, it joins the Lamasón River in Venta Fresnedo.

The river flows from west to east through a valley that is partly made of karst. Karst is a type of landscape where the rock, like limestone, dissolves easily, creating caves and sinkholes. This valley is named after the river and is located in the town of Herrerías.

Smaller Streams Joining the River

As the Latarmá River flows, several smaller streams join it. These are called tributaries. The first one is named Chorro Bucero. After that, other streams like Arauco, Seguedal, La Huerta, Pozo del Agua, and Nacimiento del Agua add their water to the Latarmá.
