The Queensland swiftwing (Lathrocordulia garrisoni) is a special type of dragonfly. It belongs to the Austrocorduliidae family. Scientists named it in 1991.
This dragonfly lives only in one place. It is found only in the north-eastern part of Australia. This means it is endemic to that area. Its home is in warm, wet forests. These are called subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. They are usually found on mountains or hills.
About the Queensland Swiftwing
The Queensland swiftwing is a fascinating insect. It is part of a group of flying insects called Odonata. Dragonflies are known for their amazing flying skills. They can hover, fly backward, and change direction very quickly.
Where it Lives
This swiftwing needs a specific kind of home. It lives in forests that are:
- Warm and wet: This means they get a lot of rain.
- Tropical or subtropical: These are areas close to the equator.
- Montane: This means they are found in mountains or hilly regions.
These special forests provide the perfect conditions for the dragonfly to live and find food.
Dragonfly Families
Sometimes, scientists are not completely sure where a species fits. For the Queensland swiftwing, there is some discussion. Scientists are still working to decide if it best belongs to the Austrocorduliidae family, the Synthemistidae family, or the Corduliidae family. This is a normal part of how science works!
