Latronianus facts for kids
Latronianus (also called Latronian) was a smart poet and scholar from Hispania (which is now Spain). He lived a long time ago, in the 300s AD. Latronianus was connected to a group of Christians called the Priscillianists.
Sadly, Latronianus was put to death in the year 385 AD in a city called Trier. He was executed along with Priscillian, who was the leader of the Priscillianists, and several other people. This event is important because Latronianus and his friends are thought to be among the first people in Christian history to be executed for having religious beliefs that were different from the main church.

Who Was Latronianus?
Latronianus was known for being a very talented writer and thinker. He was so well-known that an important writer named Jerome wrote about him. Jerome included Latronianus in his famous book called On Illustrious Men (in Latin, De Viris Illustribus).
His Life and Beliefs
Latronianus came from Roman Spain, a part of the powerful Roman Empire. He was a Christian, but he followed a specific set of beliefs known as Priscillianism. This group had ideas about Christianity that were different from what most other Christians believed at the time.
What Was Priscillianism?
Priscillianism was a Christian movement that started in Spain. Its followers had different ways of understanding the Bible and Christian teachings. These differences led to disagreements with the main Christian leaders and groups of the time.
Why Was He Executed?
In the 300s AD, there were often strong disagreements about religious beliefs. The Roman Empire, which had recently become Christian, sometimes saw different Christian groups as a threat. Latronianus and the Priscillianists were seen as having beliefs that were wrong or dangerous by the authorities. Because of these differences, Latronianus and others were arrested and then executed in 385 AD. This was a very serious event, as it was one of the first times people were killed specifically for their Christian beliefs being considered "wrong" by other Christians.

Even though Latronianus's life ended tragically, he was remembered by important people like Jerome. Jerome wrote that Latronianus was "a man of great learning." He also said that Latronianus was "worthy to be compared with the ancients as a composer in verse." This means Jerome thought Latronianus was as good a poet as the famous writers from ancient times.

Jerome's writings tell us that Latronianus had many works of his own. He wrote poems and other scholarly pieces. However, none of Latronianus's writings have survived to today. We only know about his talent and his ideas from what others, like Jerome, wrote about him.
