Laura Biagiotti (born August 4, 1943 – died May 26, 2017) was a famous Italian fashion designer. She was the person who started the well-known fashion company, the House of Biagiotti.

Laura Biagiotti's Early Life

Laura Biagiotti was born in Rome, Italy, on August 4, 1943. Her mother, Delia Soldaini Biagiotti, was also a very successful dressmaker. She even designed the uniforms for the airline Alitalia in 1964.

From a young age, Laura started helping out in her mother's fashion workshop. She was studying archaeology at Rome University, but she loved fashion so much that she decided to leave school to focus on design.

She worked with her mother for several years. During this time, she met Gianni Cigna, who would later become her husband. Together, they started a business and opened their very first store in Florence.

The House of Biagiotti Fashion Brand

Laura Biagiotti held her first big fashion show in 1972. Her company, the House of Biagiotti, quickly became one of the biggest fashion houses in Italy.

The brand makes many different products. These include clothes for women and men, cool accessories, and stylish watches.

Taking Italian Fashion to China

Laura Biagiotti was a true pioneer in the fashion world. In April 1988, she traveled to Beijing, China. She was the very first Italian designer to show her fashion collection there. This was a big step in bringing Italian style to a new part of the world.

Awards and Recognition

Laura Biagiotti received many important awards for her work. In 1995, the President of Italy honored her for her amazing contributions to fashion. Later, the Chinese government gave her the Marco Polo award for helping promote fashion in China. She also won the Leonardo Prize in Italy.

In 2002, the Italian post office even released a special stamp with her name on it! In 2011, she received the America Award from the Italy-USA Foundation.

Laura's daughter, Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, joined the family business in 1997. She became the company's vice president in 2005, continuing her mother's legacy.

From 1980 until she passed away in 2017, Laura Biagiotti lived and worked in the countryside near Rome. Her home was a beautiful, old castle from the 11th century called Marco Simone Castle. She lived there with her husband, Gianni Cigna, until he passed away in 1996.

Laura Biagiotti was recognized with many awards throughout her career:

  • In 1992, she was named "Woman of the Year" in New York.
  • In 1995, she received the Knights of Labor award from Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. This was for her long career and for making Italian fashion famous worldwide.
  • From 2000 to 2008, she was the President of the Leonardo Committee, a group of important Italians in industry, art, and culture.
  • In 2001, she was the first designer to receive the Prix Femmes d'Europe. This award honored her for helping women take part in building a united Europe.
  • In 2002, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council of Italian Fashion.
  • In July 2004, the Mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni, gave her the Lupa Capitolina award.
  • In February 2006, her daughter Lavinia accepted an award in Moscow on Laura's behalf. This celebrated Laura being the first Italian designer to show a collection in Russia in 1995.
  • In September 2007, she received the Crystal Lion Lifetime Achievement Award at the Venice International Film Festival.
  • In January 2011, the President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, presented her with the Leonardo Award.
