Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Laura Pisati was a brilliant Italian mathematician. She made history in the early 1900s. She was the first Italian woman to join a big math group. This group was called the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (DMV). She joined them in 1905. In 1908, she became the first woman ever invited to give a lecture at a huge event. This event was the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM).

Her Early Life and Studies

Laura Pisati was born in Ancona, Italy. She started working as a teacher in Rome in 1897. She taught at a secondary school for girls. She studied very hard and graduated from Sapienza University of Rome in 1905.

A Special Invitation

Laura Pisati was invited to speak at the 1908 International Congress of Mathematicians. This was a very big deal! It showed how respected she was in the world of math. Her talk was going to be about complex numbers. The title was "Saggio di una teoria sintetica delle funzioni di variabile complessa." This means "An Essay on a Synthetic Theory of Functions of a Complex Variable."

Sadly, Laura Pisati passed away just a few days before the Congress. She also passed away shortly before her wedding. Her paper was still presented at the Congress. Her mentor, Roberto Marcolongo, shared her important work.

Her Important Textbook

In 1907, Laura Pisati published a geometry textbook. It was called Elementi di geometria ad uso delle scuole medie inferiori. This book was for younger students. At that time, many teachers focused on hands-on learning. They used intuition and experiments. But Pisati's book went back to a different style. It included more rigorous proofs.

In her book's introduction, Pisati wrote something important. She believed it was a mistake to leave out formal proofs. She thought it was not harder to include them. Her book helped shape how geometry was taught in Italy. It showed her strong belief in clear, logical math.
