History of Laurel

Laurel has an interesting past, even though it's a small community today. It wasn't always called Laurel.

Early Beginnings: Van Burenville

The area that is now Laurel was first planned out and settled in 1837. Back then, it was given the name Van Burenville. This was a common way for new settlements to start in the 1800s, with people laying out streets and plots of land for homes and businesses.

The Post Office and New Name

Years later, in 1844, a post office was opened in the community. At this time, the name of the place changed to Laurel. Post offices were very important for communities in the past. They helped people send and receive letters, which was the main way to communicate over long distances. The Laurel post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1907.
