Lauren Oliver (born Laura Suzanne Schechter; November 8, 1982) is an American author. She writes many popular young adult novels. Some of her famous books include Panic and the Delirium trilogy. This trilogy has three books: Delirium, Pandemonium, and Requiem.
Oliver also wrote Before I Fall. This book was made into a movie in 2017. Her novel Panic was also turned into a TV series by Amazon. Lauren Oliver helped create and write the TV show. Her books have been translated into over thirty languages around the world. She was nominated for the E. B. White Read Aloud Award in 2012 for her middle-grade book Liesl & Po. She also wrote another middle-grade fantasy novel called The Spindlers.
Lauren Oliver went to the University of Chicago. She also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University. In 2010, she helped start a company called Paper Lantern Lit. This company helps develop new books. It is now known as Glasstown Entertainment.
Lauren Oliver's Early Life
Lauren Oliver was born in Queens, New York. She loved to read and write from a young age. Her family members were also writers. She thought it was normal to spend hours writing every day.
As a child, she would write sequels to her favorite books. She did not want to say goodbye to the characters. Later, she started writing her own stories and characters. She became very good at it.
Writing was not her only hobby. She also enjoyed ballet and drawing. She liked painting, making collages, and singing. She even experimented with cooking. She loved being creative.
After high school, she went to the University of Chicago. She studied philosophy and literature. She joked that she was being "impractical." Her older sister also studied philosophy. This made their parents realize their children would not become lawyers or doctors.
Her Books and Career
Lauren Oliver's first book was Before I Fall. It was published on March 2, 2010. The story is about a teenage girl named Sam. She relives the last day of her life seven times. Each time, she learns important lessons. She also discovers secrets about her death. Oliver wrote much of this book on her BlackBerry phone. She would email chapters to herself to work on later.
Open Road Films released the movie version of the book. It came out in theaters on March 3, 2017. Zoey Deutch played the main character, Samantha Kingston.
Oliver's second book, Delirium, is the first in her dystopian series. A novella called Hana was released after Delirium. It shows the story from Hana's point of view. The second book in the series, Pandemonium, came out on February 28, 2012. Another novella, Annabel, was released as an e-book. It tells the story of Lena's mother before Delirium.
The third and last book of the trilogy is Requiem. It was published on March 5, 2013. A third novella, Raven, was also released that day. It follows Raven's adventures between Pandemonium and Requiem. All three novellas were later released together in one book.
Oliver also writes books for younger readers. Her first middle-grade book was published in 2011. It is about a girl visited by a ghost. The ghost says her dead father is stuck in Limbo. Only she can help him. Her second middle-grade book is The Spindlers. It tells the story of Liza. She travels to a magical underworld. She must rescue her younger brother from scary creatures. This book was released on August 2, 2012.
Oliver's young adult novel Panic came out on March 4, 2014. It is about two high school graduates, Heather and Dodge. They live in a poor town. They play a dangerous game called "Panic" every summer. The game has many thrilling challenges. They become more dangerous over time. The winner gets a lot of money. This money is a chance to escape their poverty. Panic was made into a TV series by Amazon Prime Video. Lauren Oliver was the showrunner for the series.
After Panic, she wrote her first adult novel, Rooms, in 2014. Then came another teen novel, Vanishing Girls, in 2015. Vanishing Girls is about two sisters, Dara and Nick. They are dealing with a bad car accident. This accident has hurt their close relationship. The book switches between Dara's and Nick's viewpoints. Dara disappears around the same time a 9-year-old vanishes. Nick believes the disappearances are connected. She tries to find out what happened to her sister. This book is a psychological thriller. It uses regular writing and other elements to tell the mystery.
Oliver's third book for younger readers was Curiosity House: The Shrunken Head. It was released in 2015. She wrote it with H.C. Chester. Her next young adult book, Replica, tells one story from two different perspectives.
She also wrote more books in the Curiosity House series. These include Curiosity House: The Screaming Statue and Curiosity House: The Fearsome Firebird. In 2019, she became the president of Glasstown West. This is the company's film and TV division. She has helped create over one hundred books and TV/film scripts with Lexa Hillyer.
Lauren Oliver's Personal Life
Lauren Oliver was born in Queens. She grew up in Westchester, New York. This small town was much like the one in her book Before I Fall. Her father, Harold Schechter, is a true crime writer. Both of her parents are literature professors. From a young age, they encouraged her to make up stories. She also loved to draw, paint, and dance. She spent a lot of time using her imagination.
Her love for writing started with making up sequels to her favorite stories. Then she began writing her own. She studied literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago. Later, she moved back to New York. She attended NYU for a creative writing program.
At the same time, she worked at Penguin Books. She worked in a young adult division called Razorbill. There, she started working on Before I Fall. In 2009, she left to become a full-time writer. She now happily works from home. Lauren Oliver lives in Los Angeles, California.
