Lauren Oliver (born Laura Suzanne Schechter on November 8, 1982) is a well-known American author. She writes many books for young adults. Some of her most famous books include the Delirium trilogy and Before I Fall. Before I Fall was even made into a movie in 2017. Her book Panic also became a TV series. Lauren Oliver's books have been translated into over thirty languages around the world.

Oliver went to the University of Chicago. She also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University. In 2010, she helped start a company called Paper Lantern Lit. This company helps develop new books and stories. It is now known as Glasstown Entertainment.

About Lauren Oliver's Life

Lauren Oliver was born in Queens, New York. She grew up in Westchester, New York. Her parents were both literature professors. This meant she was always encouraged to be creative. She loved making up stories, drawing, painting, and dancing.

From a young age, Lauren loved to read and write. She would often write her own sequels to books she finished. She didn't want to say goodbye to the characters! Later, she started writing her own original stories. She also enjoyed ballet, drawing, painting, and cooking. She liked to spend her time being as creative as possible.

When she went to the University of Chicago, she studied philosophy and literature. She wanted to pursue her passions.

Lauren Oliver's Books and Career

Lauren Oliver's first book, Before I Fall, was published on March 2, 2010. It tells the story of a teenage girl named Sam. Sam has to relive the last day of her life seven times. Each time, she learns important lessons about life and friendship. Lauren Oliver wrote much of this book on her BlackBerry phone. She would email chapters to herself while riding the subway.

Open Road Films released the movie version of Before I Fall on March 3, 2017. The main character, Samantha Kingston, was played by Zoey Deutch.

The Delirium Trilogy

Oliver's second book, Delirium, was the first in her popular dystopian series. A dystopian story is about a future world where things have gone wrong. In Delirium, love is seen as a disease. People are "cured" of it when they turn 18.

  • The first novella, Hana, was released after Delirium. It shows the story from Hana's point of view.
  • The second book in the trilogy, Pandemonium, came out on February 28, 2012.
  • Another novella, Annabel, was released on December 26, 2012. It tells the story of Lena's mother before Delirium begins.
  • The third and final book, Requiem, was published on March 5, 2013.
  • A third novella, Raven, was also published on March 5, 2013. It follows Raven's adventures between Pandemonium and Requiem.
  • All three novellas (Hana, Annabel, and Raven) were later released together in one book.

Middle-Grade and Young Adult Novels

Lauren Oliver has also written books for middle-grade readers. Her first middle-grade book was published on September 1, 2011. It is about a girl who meets a ghost. The ghost says her dead father is stuck in Limbo. Only she can help him move on. Her second middle-grade book, The Spindlers, came out on August 2, 2012. It's about a girl named Liza who goes into a magical underworld. She wants to rescue her younger brother from strange creatures.

Oliver's young adult novel Panic was released on March 4, 2014. This book is about high school students in a small, poor town. Every summer, they play a dangerous game called "Panic." The game involves many challenges that become more and more risky. The winner gets a lot of money. This money is their chance to escape poverty. Panic was made into a television series by Amazon Prime Video. Lauren Oliver was the showrunner for the series. This means she helped create and manage the show.

She also wrote her first adult novel, Rooms, on September 23, 2014. Another teen novel, Vanishing Girls, came out on March 10, 2015. Vanishing Girls is about two sisters, Dara and Nick. They are dealing with problems after a bad car accident. Their close relationship has changed. When Dara disappears, Nick believes it's connected to another missing child. She tries to find out what happened to her sister. This book is a psychological thriller.

Oliver's third book for younger readers was Curiosity House: The Shrunken Head. It was released on September 29, 2015. She wrote this book with H.C. Chester.

Her next young adult book, Replica, lets readers experience the same story from two different characters' points of view.

She continued the Curiosity House series with Curiosity House: The Screaming Statue and Curiosity House: The Fearsome Firebird.

In 2019, Lauren Oliver became the president of Glasstown West. This is the film and TV part of her company. She has helped create and develop over one hundred original books and TV/film scripts.
