Career as a Writer
Working at Vogue
After her travels, Lauren moved to Manhattan. She got a job as an assistant to Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue magazine. She worked there for ten months. Lauren later said she felt like she didn't quite fit in at the magazine.
Starting Her First Book
After leaving Vogue, Lauren started working for Departures magazine. She wrote short reviews and became an assistant editor. She told a friend that she wanted to take writing classes. Her friend suggested she write a story about her time at Vogue. Lauren started writing about 15 pages every few weeks. When she finished the story, she showed it to literary agents. Her book was sold to a publisher within two weeks!
The Devil Wears Prada
Lauren Weisberger's first book, The Devil Wears Prada, came out in 2003. It quickly became a bestseller and stayed on The New York Times Best Seller List for six months. By 2006, it was one of the best-selling paperback books in the country.
The book is a fictional story, but it is based on Lauren's own experiences at Vogue magazine. The main character, Miranda Priestly, is thought to be inspired by Anna Wintour. The book shows the funny and sometimes difficult parts of having a first job in the high-fashion world. Not everyone at Vogue liked the book, as it showed a critical view of the fashion industry.
The Movie Adaptation
The Devil Wears Prada was made into a movie in 2006 by 20th Century Fox. It starred Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly and Anne Hathaway as Andrea Sachs. The movie was a big hit, earning over $326 million worldwide.
The movie is a bit different from the book. For example, in the movie, Andrea goes to Northwestern University, but in the book, she goes to Brown University. Also, the ending of the movie is different from the book. In the movie, Andrea and Miranda part ways with some respect. In the book, Andrea gets fired after yelling at Miranda. Lauren Weisberger even had a small role in the film as the twins' nanny!
Television Series
In 2006, there were plans to make The Devil Wears Prada into a TV show. However, the series was never created.
