Laurent-Emmanuel de Renaud d'Aleins was born in Alleins, France, on July 12, 1739. He came from a noble family in Salon-de-Provence, which meant his family had a high social standing and often owned land.
Aleins decided to join the French Navy at a young age, becoming a Garde-Marine in 1750. A Garde-Marine was a young officer in training, similar to a cadet today, learning everything about naval warfare and sailing. He worked hard and steadily moved up the ranks. In 1764, he was promoted to Lieutenant, and by 1777, he became a Captain.
Fighting for Freedom: The American War
Captain Aleins commanded a powerful warship called the Hector. This ship was a "74-gun" vessel, meaning it carried 74 cannons, making it a very strong warship for its time. He led the Hector in two important battles during the American Revolutionary War:
- The Battle of Fort Royal on April 29, 1781.
- The Battle of the Chesapeake on September 5, 1781. This battle was very important because it helped the American and French forces win the war.
Later, in 1782, Aleins commanded another 74-gun ship, the Neptune. He took part in the Battle of the Saintes on April 12, 1782, while captaining this ship.
Rising Through the Ranks
Aleins continued to serve with distinction. In 1786, he was chosen to be the flag captain for Admiral François Hector d'Albert de Rions. A flag captain is the captain of the ship where the admiral is sailing, so it's a very important role. Together, they participated in a special naval review (a parade of ships) for King Louis XVI of France in Cherbourg. In that same year, Aleins received another promotion, becoming a Chef de Division, which was a high rank in the French Navy.
