Becoming a Countess
Lauretta became the Countess of Saarbrücken because of a sad event. Her father, Simon III, Count of Saarbrücken, had a son named Dietrich who passed away in 1227. Since Dietrich was no longer alive, Simon chose Lauretta to be his heir. This meant she would take over as ruler after him.
Simon made an official announcement about this decision. He did this with the Bishop of Metz, who was a very important church leader. Simon also gave parts of the county to his other daughters. Lauretta officially became the Countess of Saarbrücken when her father, Simon, died in 1233.
Lauretta's Marriages
Countess Lauretta was married two times during her life. Her first husband was Gottfried II of Aspremont. He passed away in 1250.
Later, in 1252, Lauretta married for a second time. Her second husband was Dietrich I Luf of Cleves. He was born around 1228 and died in 1277. Dietrich was a younger son from the powerful family of the Counts of Cleves.
Husbands as Co-Rulers
Both of Lauretta's husbands were considered counts alongside her for a period. This is known as jure uxoris, which is a Latin term meaning "by right of his wife." It means they held the title of count because they were married to the countess.
This arrangement lasted from 1243 to 1259. After this time, Dietrich I Luf returned to his home region of Cleves.
Family and Succession
Lauretta and Dietrich had a daughter named Richardis. Richardis was still young and not yet married when Lauretta was nearing the end of her life.
Instead of Richardis inheriting the county, Lauretta decided that her sister, Mathilde, should become the next ruler of Saarbrücken.
Richardis later married Gerlach II in 1285. Gerlach II was a lord from Dollendorf and Kronenburg. Richardis and Gerlach had at least one child together.
