Laurie Heyer facts for kids
Laurie J. Heyer is an American mathematician who works with genomics and bioinformatics. Genomics is the study of all of an organism's genes. Bioinformatics uses computer science to understand biological information. Dr. Heyer is a special professor of mathematics at Davidson College. She also leads a center for new ideas and businesses there. She used to be in charge of the math and computer science departments at Davidson.
Her College Journey
Laurie Heyer went to the University of Texas at Arlington for her first college degree. Later, she earned her advanced degree, called a Ph.D., in 1998. She got this degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. For her Ph.D., she wrote a big research paper. This paper was about how to understand genetic sequences using math. Her teachers, John A. Williamson and Gary Stormo, helped her with this important work.
Books She Wrote
Dr. Heyer has written important textbooks that help students learn about science. With Malcolm Campbell, she wrote a book called Discovering Genomics, Proteomics, & Bioinformatics. This book helps people learn about genes and how computers can study them. It was first published in 2003. They also wrote another electronic book. It is called Integrating Concepts in Biology. This book helps students connect different ideas in biology.
