Lawrence is a small place in Newton County, Mississippi, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government like a big town or city does.
A Look Back at Lawrence
Lawrence was started in 1866. It was named after someone who worked for the railroad. A post office opened there in 1867.
In its early days, Lawrence was a busy place. It had many mills and stores. There was even a town doctor and several churches.
Challenges and Growth
In 1878, Lawrence faced a difficult time. A yellow fever epidemic caused many people to leave. The town's population became smaller.
But Lawrence bounced back! After the epidemic, it became busy again. New businesses and mills opened. The town's economy was strong because of its famous fruit crops.
By the 1900s, Lawrence had two churches and several general stores. It also had a grist mill, which grinds grain. In 1900, about 75 people lived there. By 1906, the population grew to an estimated 125 people.
