His Football Journey
Lawrence Akandu started his football career as a centre forward. This position is usually for players who lead the attack and score goals. Later in his career, he also played as a defender. Defenders are players who try to stop the other team from scoring.
Playing in Hong Kong
In 1994, Lawrence moved to Hong Kong from a Polish club called Wisła Kraków. He played for several teams in Hong Kong. These included Frankwell, Five-One-Seven, and Tung Po.
In 2002, Lawrence joined Kitchee. At that time, Kitchee was in the Hong Kong Second Division. He was a very strong centre forward. He scored 15 goals during the 2002–03 season. His goals helped Kitchee get promoted to the Hong Kong First Division. This was a big step up for the team.
Success with Happy Valley
For the 2003–04 season, Lawrence joined Happy Valley. This was one of the best teams in the Hong Kong First Division League. Even though he was new to the top league, he quickly became a key player. He scored ten goals in the first half of the season. This made him one of the top scorers in the league.
Playing for Hong Kong
In November 2003, Lawrence Akandu became a permanent resident of Hong Kong. This meant he could play for the Hong Kong national football team. He played as a striker for the team.
He scored a goal in his very first game for Hong Kong. This match was against Korea Republic on December 4, 2003. It was part of the East Asian Football Championship 2003. His goal was the only one for Hong Kong in that game.
