Lawrence Nilson (born in 1734, died in 1811) was an important officer in the Bombay Army. This army was part of the East India Company, a big British trading company that also had its own military forces in India. Nilson reached the high rank of Brigadier-General.
Lawrence Nilson's Military Journey
Lawrence Nilson started as the first Chief Engineer for the Bombay Army. In 1777, he created a special group of 100 men called Pioneer Lascars. These were skilled soldiers who helped build things and clear paths.
His company joined a military trip to the Malabar Coast in 1782. They fought against the forces of Tipu Sultan, a powerful ruler, during the Second Anglo-Mysore War. This was a big conflict between the British and the Kingdom of Mysore.
Nilson's career continued to grow. On January 6, 1785, he became the Commander-in-chief of the entire Bombay Army. He held this very important position until he retired on September 6, 1788.
