Lawrence 'Lawrie' Dring (born July 4, 1931 – died September 6, 2012) was an important British Scouter. Early Life and Beginnings
Lawrie Dring was born in Dundee, Scotland. He was one of two twin boys. Even though he was born in Scotland, his birth was officially recorded in Leeds, England. Lawrie was proud of his Scottish background.
After finishing school, Lawrie worked in chemical engineering. This job involves using chemistry and physics to design and operate plants that make products.
A Life in Scouting
Lawrie Dring's journey in Scouting began when he was a soldier. In 1947, he was serving in the British Army in Germany. A friend asked him to become a leader for Cub Scouts. This was the start of his long dedication to Scouting.
Joining the Boy Scout Association
After his time in the army, Lawrie joined The Boy Scout Association in Leeds. He was an active member and served on their main committee. This was a big organization for young people.
Forming New Scout Groups
Later, Lawrie disagreed with some new ideas for The Boy Scout Association. He felt these changes moved away from the original ideas of Scouting. Because of this, he decided to leave.
He then helped create the Baden-Powell Scouts' Association (BPSA). This group wanted to follow the original methods and traditions of Scouting, as set up by Robert Baden-Powell.

Lawrie Dring held many important roles in the BPSA. He was the chief commissioner for a time. Later, he became the president of the association. Even with these big jobs, he still volunteered as a Scouter for a local group, the 1st Yorkshire Baden-Powell Scouts Troop.

Lawrie Dring passed away on September 6, 2012. His funeral was a special event. Scouts and leaders from many different Scout groups attended. Scouts from his own group, the First Yorkshire B-P Scout Group, carried his coffin.
Lawrie Dring is remembered for his strong belief in the original values of Scouting. He helped make sure that traditional Scouting continued for many young people.
