Lazar Marković (born on March 2, 1994) is a professional football player from Serbia. He plays as a winger for the club Baniyas in the UAE Pro League.
Lazar began his football journey at Partizan in Serbia. In 2013, he moved to Benfica in Portugal. There, he had a fantastic season, winning three major trophies. After that, he joined Liverpool for about £20 million. He also played for several other clubs on loan, including Fenerbahçe, Sporting CP, Hull City, Anderlecht, and Fulham.
Marković first played for the senior Serbian national team in 2012. He has played for his country more than 20 times.
Club Career
Starting at Partizan
Lazar Marković started playing football at a young age. He joined the youth team of Borac Čačak. In 2006, when he was 12 years old, he moved to Partizan, a big club in Serbia.
On May 29, 2011, Marković was called up to the first team. This was just before the last game of the 2010–11 SuperLiga season. He played as a substitute in Partizan's 2–1 win against Sloboda Užice.
First Professional Contract
On July 11, 2011, Lazar signed his first professional contract with Partizan. It was a five-year deal. He played his first game of the 2011–12 season in a UEFA Champions League qualifying match.
Marković scored his first goal for the senior team on August 13, 2011, against Novi Pazar. At the end of 2011, fans voted him Partizan's Player of the Year. In his first full season, he played 26 league games and scored six goals. He was also chosen for the 2011–12 SuperLiga Team of the Year.
Playing in Europe
In the 2012–13 season, Partizan played in the group stage of a UEFA competition. Marković played in all the group matches. He impressed against teams like Neftchi Baku, Rubin Kazan, and Internazionale.
By the end of the 2012–13 season, Marković had played 19 league games and scored 7 goals. For the second year in a row, he was named in the SuperLiga's Team of the Year.
Moving to Benfica
On June 10, 2013, Lazar Marković signed a five-year contract with Benfica, a famous club in Portugal.
He made his debut for Benfica on August 25, 2013. He scored a crucial goal in the 92nd minute to help Benfica win 2–1 against Gil Vicente. In another important game against Sporting CP, he scored a great goal after dribbling past three players. The match ended in a 1–1 draw.
On May 1, 2014, during a Europa League semi-final match against Juventus, Marković was sent off. This meant he could not play in the final. Benfica lost the final to Sevilla on penalties.
Time at Liverpool

On July 15, 2014, Liverpool announced they had signed Marković from Benfica for £20 million. He made his first game for Liverpool on August 25, 2014. He came on as a substitute in a 3–1 loss to Manchester City.
In a Champions League match against Basel in December 2014, Marković received a red card. This meant Liverpool dropped into the Europa League. He was later banned for four European matches because of this incident.
Marković scored his first goal for Liverpool on December 17, 2014. It was in a League Cup quarter-final against AFC Bournemouth, which Liverpool won 3–1. On January 10, 2015, he scored his first Premier League goal against Sunderland. He scored again in the Premier League on February 10, helping Liverpool win 3–2 against Tottenham Hotspur.
Loan to Fenerbahçe
On August 30, 2015, Marković joined Fenerbahçe in Turkey on a loan for one season. He played his first game for them on September 13. He scored his first goal for Fenerbahçe on December 10 in a Europa League match against Celtic. This result helped Fenerbahçe move forward in the competition. His season ended early in February due to a hamstring injury.
Loans to Sporting and Hull
On August 31, 2016, Marković returned to Lisbon, Portugal. He joined Sporting CP on a season-long loan. He made his debut on September 10 and scored his first goal for Sporting three weeks later.
In January 2017, Marković's loan in Portugal ended. He then joined Premier League club Hull City for the rest of the season. He played his first game for Hull in a League Cup semi-final against Manchester United. He scored his first goal for Hull on April 5 in a 4–2 win against Middlesbrough.
Loan to Anderlecht
In January 2018, Marković went on loan again, this time to Anderlecht in Belgium. He played eight games for the club and scored one goal.
Playing for Fulham
On January 31, 2019, Marković moved to Fulham on a free transfer. He played only one game for the team on February 22. After his contract ended on June 30, 2019, he left the club.
Return to Partizan
On September 3, 2019, Marković signed a three-year contract to return to Partizan. He scored his first goal in his second time at Partizan on September 15, 2019, in a 3–0 win against Proleter Novi Sad.
Playing for Gaziantep
In July 2022, Marković moved to Turkey again to join Gaziantep. He signed a two-year deal.
In February 2023, Gaziantep had to stop playing for the 2022–23 season because of a big earthquake. Marković then joined Trabzonspor on loan until the end of the season.
International Career
Lazar Marković has played for Serbia at different age levels. In October 2009, he played for the Serbia under-17 team. He also played in the 2011 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in May 2011.
He then moved straight to the Serbian under-21 team. He made his debut for them on October 11, 2011.
On February 24, 2012, Marković was called up to the Serbian senior national team. He made his debut on February 28, 2012, just three days before his 18th birthday. He scored his first goal for Serbia in a friendly match against Chile.
Personal Life
Lazar Marković's older brother, Filip, is also a football player. He also came through Partizan's youth system.
