Early Life and Military Career
León Ortiz de Rozas was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on April 11, 1760. His father, Domingo Ortiz de Rozas, was a captain from Spain. His mother, Catalina de la Cuadra, was a noblewoman from Buenos Aires.
He started his military career very young, in 1767, as a cadet. A cadet is a trainee in the armed forces. He later became a sublieutenant and then a lieutenant in 1789. He eventually reached the rank of captain, serving in the Regimiento Fijo de Buenos Aires. This was an important army unit in the region.
Military Campaigns and Challenges
León Ortiz de Rozas took part in many military actions. These were often against indigenous groups in the countryside of Buenos Aires. In 1785, he was captured by the Pampas tribes. He was held prisoner for over a year, from January 26, 1785, until September 16, 1786.
He and his family also helped defend Buenos Aires when the British tried to invade in the early 1800s. He retired from the army in 1809, after serving for 42 years.
Political Life
After his long military career, León Ortiz de Rozas also had a short time in politics. He served as a regidor (a type of council member) in the Cabildo de Buenos Aires from 1811 to 1814. The Cabildo was like the city council during colonial times.
In 1814, he was the interim (temporary) mayor of Buenos Aires. He was also put in charge of supervising the weekly draws for the national lottery.
Family and Legacy
On September 30, 1790, León Ortiz de Rozas married Agustina López de Osornio in Buenos Aires. Agustina came from a well-known local family. They had twelve children together, including Juan Manuel de Rosas. Juan Manuel later became a very famous and powerful governor of Buenos Aires.
Through his mother's side, Ortiz de Rozas was related to some of the first Spanish explorers and settlers of the Río de la Plata and Paraguay. One of his ancestors was the famous explorer Domingo Martínez de Irala.
León Ortiz de Rozas passed away on August 15, 1839, in Buenos Aires. He was buried with military honors in the Recoleta Cemetery.
