Leach Railroad Station is a small, unincorporated community in Boyd County, Kentucky. It's located about three miles south of Catlettsburg. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
History of Leach Railroad Station
Early Days as a Railroad Stop
Leach Railroad Station began around 1882. It was first built as a place for the Chatteroi railroad to load and unload both goods and passengers. The Chatteroi railroad later became part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. This made Leach an important stop for people and products traveling by train.
Changes Over Time
Today, much of the area that was once the community of Leach Station is owned by Marathon Oil. This company runs one of its large oil refineries there. Marathon Oil bought the refinery at Leach Station from another company, Ashland, Inc., in 1999.
In 2000, Marathon Oil also took over ownership of the old U.S. 23 road in the area. After that, they bought the remaining homes and properties in Leach Station. This means that most of the former community is now part of the refinery's operations.
