Leadmine, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Leadmine (sometimes called Lead Mine) is a small place in northern Dallas County, in the state of Missouri in the United States. It's not a big city with its own government, but more like a small group of homes. You can find it about 3.5 miles east of a town called Tunas, right on Missouri Route E. A special nature area, the Lead Mines Conservation Area, is also nearby, just half a mile to the east. Leadmine is about 50 miles north-northeast of a larger city called Springfield.

The Story Behind Leadmine's Name

Leadmine got its name because there used to be a lead mine very close to where the community started. Imagine a place named after something important found there! A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, was opened in Lead Mine in 1877. It stayed open for many years, until 1934.

Leadmine's Connection to Baseball

Even small communities can have famous people! Roy Meeker, who was a professional baseball player, was born in Leadmine in 1900. He became a pitcher in Major League Baseball, which is the highest level of professional baseball in the United States and Canada.
