What Are Moraines?

Moraines are landforms made from rocks, sand, and dirt left behind by glaciers. Imagine a giant bulldozer made of ice! As glaciers move, they scrape up and push along huge amounts of material. When the ice melts, all this material is left behind. This creates hills, ridges, or mounds called moraines.

How the Leaf Hills Formed

The Leaf Hills Moraines were formed during the last Ice Age. This was many thousands of years ago. Huge sheets of ice, called glaciers, covered much of North America. As these glaciers moved across Minnesota, they picked up tons of soil and rocks. When the glaciers stopped moving and began to melt, they dropped all this material. This created the unique hilly landscape we see today in the Leaf Hills.

Why Are They Called "Leaf Mountains"?

Even though they are called "mountains," the Leaf Hills are not true mountains. They are hills formed by glaciers. The name "Leaf Mountains" probably comes from how tall they seem compared to the flat land around them. They stand out like small mountains in the landscape.
