Leah Singer is an artist who takes pictures and creates art using different types of media. She often works with her husband, Lee Ranaldo, who is famous for being in the band Sonic Youth. Leah uses special movie projectors in her performances. She changes how fast the film plays, making new and exciting visuals on the spot. It's a bit like a DJ who "scratches" records to make new sounds, but Leah does it with film!

About Leah Singer's Life and Art

Leah Singer was born in Winnipeg, Canada. She studied journalism and photography in Toronto at a school now called Toronto Metropolitan University.

In the 1980s, she moved to New York City to learn about making films. There, she started working with musicians who create music on the spot, without a plan. She also learned to be a painter. Leah's art often mixes these different skills: photography, film, and painting.

Since 1991, she has made many art projects with her husband, Lee Ranaldo. Her artwork has been shown in museums, art galleries, and concert halls all over the world.

Leah has two sons, Sage Ranaldo and Frey Ranaldo. She has also written several books with her husband. These include Bookstore, Road Movies, and Moroccan Journal: Jajouka excerpt. They even traveled to Jajouka, Morocco. They followed the path of famous artists and writers like William S. Burroughs and Brian Jones who had visited there before them.

One of her projects, called Drift, was turned into a DVD and a book. The book includes talks between Leah and Lee. It also has writings from other artists and writers, like experimental filmmaker Jonas Mekas.

Leah Singer has also worked with other musicians and artists. These include Elliott Sharp and Ikue Mori.
