Leann, Missouri facts for kids
Leann is a small, quiet place in the countryside of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and people living together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. You can find Leann in the northeastern part of Barry County.
Where is Leann?
Leann is located right on Missouri Route 39, a main road that runs through the area. It's about two miles north of another small community called Jenkins. If you look to the east side of Leann, you'll see Jenkins Creek flowing by. The larger town of Cassville is about twelve miles southwest of Leann.
A Look at Leann's Past
Leann wasn't always called Leann! For a short time, it was known by a different name: Marmaduke.
The Post Office Story
A post office was first opened in the area in 1886, and it was called Marmaduke. However, just four years later, in 1890, the name of the post office was changed to Leann. This post office served the community for many years before it finally closed its doors in 1935.
How Leann Got Its Name
The name Leann was chosen to honor a person! It was named after Leann Thomas, who was the wife of one of the early postmasters in the community.
