Learotha Williams (born around 1967) is an American historian. He is a professor at Tennessee State University. He teaches about African-American history and how history is shared with the public.

Growing Up and Learning

Learotha Williams was born in Tallahassee, Florida, around 1967. He went to Florida State University. There, he earned three degrees: a bachelor's, a master's, and a PhD. He finished his PhD in 2003.

His Work as a Historian

Teaching History

From 2004 to 2009, Dr. Williams taught African-American history. He taught at Armstrong State University, which is now part of Georgia Southern University. Today, he is a professor at Tennessee State University. He teaches about African-American history and public history. Public history is about sharing history with everyone, not just in classrooms.

Studying Nashville's Past

Dr. Williams studies the history of African-American enslaved people in Nashville, Tennessee. He looks at what happened before the American Civil War (1861–1865). He also researches the slave auctions that took place on Charlotte Avenue.

He helped put up a special historical marker. This marker shows where important events happened. It was placed on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Charlotte Avenue. It was officially dedicated on December 7, 2018.

Exploring North Nashville's Heritage

Dr. Williams also explores the history of North Nashville. This is a neighborhood where many Black families live. He leads a project called the North Nashville Heritage Project. As part of this project, he has interviewed people who live and own businesses on Jefferson Street. This street is a main road in the neighborhood.
