History of the Old Union Depot
Building the Train Station
The building was first built in 1888. It served as a train station for the Union Pacific Railroad. A man named James A. McGonigle built it. The design came from a famous architecture company called Cobb and Frost in Chicago.
From Station to Community Hub
In 1984, the Greenamyre family sold the old train station to the city of Leavenworth. The city decided to give the building a new life. They used money from a special bond to fix it up.
The old depot was completely changed! It got a basketball gym and a room for fitness. There were also racquetball courts and an indoor swimming pool. They added activity rooms and meeting spaces too. A 1/10-of-a-mile indoor walking track was also built.
The new community center opened its doors in 1988. This was exactly 100 years after it was first built!
Recent Updates and Renovations
The building has continued to get updates. In 2012, a newer South Wing Room was remodeled. The outside of the building also got a facelift. Its brick and sandstone exterior was renovated in 2014. The city even received a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation in 2010. This money helped them replace the old sandstone.
