Discovering Lebanon's Historic Past
This historic district is made up of five different important areas in Lebanon. These areas include the main shopping street, the neighborhood around McKendree University, and two other areas where people lived. There is even an ancient archaeological site at the edge of the city.
How Lebanon Began
Lebanon started to grow in the 1820s. Soon after, in 1828, McKendree University was founded. One of the oldest buildings still standing is the Mermaid House Hotel. It was built in 1830 and shows a style of building called Federal architecture.
German Immigrants Shape the Town
Starting in the 1830s, many German immigrants came to Lebanon. Their arrival had a big impact on how the city grew and developed. They brought new ideas and skills that helped shape the town.
A College Town's Story
In the 1850s and 1860s, a railroad line came to Lebanon. This helped local businesses grow. Even with the railroad and new industries, Lebanon mostly stayed a small college town. It never became a huge industrial city or a major trading hub. It kept its friendly, small-town feel, centered around the university.
National Recognition for History
The Lebanon Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 4, 1978. This means it is recognized as an important historical place in the United States.
