The Lee Gardens North Historic District, also known as Woodbury Park Apartments, is a special area in Arlington County, Virginia. It's called a historic district because it has important old buildings. This district includes thirty buildings that are joined together. They form seven main apartment buildings in a neighborhood in north Arlington.

These buildings are part of a "garden apartment" complex. This means they are apartments surrounded by shared green spaces and gardens. The famous architect Mihran Mesrobian designed them. He followed the building rules set by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). The FHA helped make sure homes were built well. The Lee Gardens North complex was finished between 1949 and 1950. The buildings are made of brick and show the Colonial Revival style. Some windows also have touches of the Art Deco and Moderne styles.

What is a Historic District?

A historic district is a special area recognized for its important past. It contains buildings, structures, or sites that share a common history or architectural style. These places are protected to help people learn about the past. They also help keep the unique look and feel of a neighborhood.

Why Lee Gardens North is Special

The Lee Gardens North area is important because it shows how people lived in the mid-1900s. It also shows the popular building styles of that time. The buildings were designed to be comfortable and modern for families.

Building Styles You Can See

The apartments at Lee Gardens North show a mix of interesting building styles.

Colonial Revival Style

The main style is Colonial Revival. This style became popular in the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It looks back to the architecture of the American colonial period. You might see features like brick walls, simple shapes, and classic window designs. It often includes details that remind people of early American homes.

Art Deco and Moderne Touches

You can also spot elements of Art Deco and Moderne styles. These styles were popular in the 1920s and 1930s.

  • Art Deco often uses bold geometric shapes and decorative patterns. It can look very sleek and modern.
  • Moderne is similar but often simpler. It focuses on clean lines and smooth surfaces. It aims for a very functional and streamlined look.

These styles are mostly seen in the windows and other small details of the Lee Gardens North buildings.

National Recognition

The Lee Gardens North Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The National Register is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect these places. It also makes sure their stories are remembered for future generations.
